Various flours are currently being recalled because certain toxins have been detected in the products. Consumption of the affected product could, among other things, cause symptoms such as dizziness and headaches. Consumption is therefore not recommended.
As the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) reports on its “lebensmittelwarning.de” portal and the Swiss Federal Office for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (BLV) reports on its website, two flour recalls are currently taking place.
Too high levels of tropane alkaloids
According to the BLV and the BVL, Bauck GmbH is recalling the Bauckhof teff flour whole grain in the 400 gram pack because high levels of tropane alkaloids were measured in it.
The recall affects batches 227824 and 228871 with the best before dates (Best Before) September 19, 2023 and October 30, 2023.
A health risk cannot be ruled out. It is recommended not to consume the affected product.
Dizziness and headaches
Tropane alkaloids are naturally occurring plant toxins that come from seeds of other plants on grain-growing areas and are harvested.
These toxins can cause acute symptoms such as dizziness, headaches or nausea.
People who have consumed Bauckhof whole grain teff flour should consult a doctor if the symptoms mentioned occur.
Increased hydrogen cyanide content
As reported on “lebensmittelwarning.de”, the manufacturer Unidex BV is calling. from Hillegom (Netherlands) returned the product cassava flour/manioc cassava flour 910g, with the lot number MP301222 and the best-before date of December 30, 2024.
The reason for this recall: an increased hydrogen cyanide content.
Hydrocyanic acid (cyanide) is a highly toxic substance that occurs naturally in bound form as so-called cyanogenic glycosides in some plant foods, explains the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) on its website.
When consumed and digested, cyanide is released by the plant’s own enzyme β-glucosidase. Excessive consumption of foods containing hydrogen cyanide can cause serious poisoning and even death in humans. (ad)
