The names of the directors and films in competition at Cannes 2023 have been released; among them, also three Italians.
The Italian candidates for Cannes: Moretti, Rohrwacher and Bellocchio
The official list of candidates for the 2023 Cannes Film Festival is out and features three names of Italian directors: Marco Bellocchio, Nanni Moretti and Alice Rohrwacher. A noteworthy Italian presence in the main section of the French exhibition which will be held from 16 to 27 May. Nanni Moretti, the Italian director who has already attended the Cannes Film Festival eight times in France, will delight us with Il sole dell’avvenire, whose release in Italian theaters is scheduled for 20 April. All this 45 years after the release of Ecce Bombo. In the cast: Margherita Buy, Silvio Orlando, Barbora Bobulova and Mathieu Amalric. Marco Bellocchio instead, whose latest effort, the film Exterior Night on the kidnapping of Aldo Moro, has earned an international success also thanks to its presence in Cannes last year, will present Rapito. The story of Edgardo Mortara, a Jewish child estranged from his family in 1858, will see the light in theaters on May 25th. Finally, Alice Rohrwacher with the film La Chimera: in the cast Josh O’Connor (the young Carlo in The Crown) Alba Rohrwacher and Isabella Rossellini. The director returns to Cannes after winning Best Screenplay in 2018, with the film Lazzaro Felice.
