In 2021, women are still forced to choose between work and motherhood. And Italy at the top of this shameful reality
How much does it cost to be a woman today? In terms of employment, a lot, given that in our country there are women in the crosshairs of poverty. But the figures are even more disarming if we look at the situation of mothers. More and more out of work, more and more sun.

In the 2020 report on Poverty and social exclusion in Italy, drawn up by Caritas Italiana, it emerged that the health emergency and the consequent economic crisis had a greater impact on some people than on others, increasing the gender gap at work.
What was already a precarious balance, therefore, received the coup de grace in this complicated year, and the latest Eurostat data confirm this. Still women have the worst. Especially those who are between the ages of 20 and 34 and who do not have a job. Not by choice, of course, how much more the absence of an offer destined for them, which is then exacerbated in the case of women with children.
We confirm it, in 2021 women are still forced to choose between work and motherhood. And this is confirmed by the numbers that bring Italy to the top of this shameful ranking: only 57.3% of mothers have a job, this means that almost half of the female population is unemployed. This percentage also includes women who choose not to work, of course, but we cannot ignore the fact that our country is the one with the lowest female unemployment rate in all of Europe.
For men with children, however, the situation is extremely different, almost paradoxical. In fact, the number of dads at work is higher than that of men without children.
The tragic reality that belongs to us, of course, is not unknown to the mothers of our country. In fact, in 2020, a survey conducted by Viking Italia brought to light all the dissatisfaction of women with this situation which really deserves a concrete intervention.
29% of the women surveyed said they had to postpone the idea of having a child to continue their career or for fear of losing their job. 17%, on the other hand, said they had a negative impact on their career after becoming a mother.
Most of the women surveyed said they were willing to forgo a pay raise in order to get better conditions for motherhood. And this should make us reflect.
