Pomegranates can help relieve hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. In addition, numerous other positive health effects can also be hoped for.
In a systematic review, researchers at Babol University of Medical Sciences examined the effects of pomegranate on the health of peri- and postmenopausal women. The results are published in the specialist magazine “Phytotherapy Research”.
Health Benefits of Pomegranates
Pomegranates and pomegranate juice are associated with extensive health benefits. Previous studies have shown that pomegranate can reduce inflammation and protect against diabetes. Pomegranate juice can also help lower blood pressure.
Based on an evaluation of previous research results, the team has now investigated to what extent pomegranates can also relieve menopausal symptoms and improve the general health of peri- and postmenopausal women.
Relief from menopausal symptoms
The available study results indicate that pomegranate can significantly reduce the severity of hot flashes and menopause symptoms, the researchers report. The level of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) has also fallen.
The team also noticed improvements in body mass index and weight. However, due to the small sample sizes and the lack of blinding and randomization in the available studies, the results are only of limited significance.
Further studies required
The researchers conclude that further well-designed studies with larger samples are now needed to clearly demonstrate the positive effects of pomegranates on women during menopause. (fp)
