From the novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa to the masterpiece film by Luchino Visconti, The Leopard now arrives on television: filming of the TV series has officially begun.
The Leopard: the Netflix TV series
Sixty years have passed since the release of the film “The Leopard”, signed by Luchino Visconti and based on the homonymous novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. Today, the same story becomes a television series in six episodes for the Netflix streaming platform: “Let’s go back to one of the most important novels of our twentieth century, an epic story and at the same time an intimate saga, set in the opulent beauty of Sicily in the second half of the ’19th century between Baroque palaces and the contrasting colors of a sun-scorched land,” explains Tinny Andreatta, vice president for Italian content at Netflix.
The filming of the series has begun
Filming has begun and the production of the blockbuster will require a great deal of effort: “There are different environments to be reconstructed with philological care. For this we have three different types of consultants: a religious one, a historian and one from the label who have worked closely with the screenwriters. We have five tailors who are making the original costumes, a crew of 250 people, 32 weeks of pre-production, locations in almost all of Sicily”, explains Fabrizio Donvito, Partner & Founder of Indiana Production. There will be three directors who will direct the series: Thomas Otto Shankland, Giuseppe Capotondi and Laura Luchetti.
The Leopard, the TV series with a stellar cast
In Luchino Visconti’s film the protagonists were played by great celebrities such as Burt Lancaster, Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale; the new cast of the TV series will try to give a new face to the characters, relying on well-loved names – in Italy and around the world. Kim Rossi Stuart will play Don Fabrizio Corbera, prince of Salina, Saul Nanni will be Tancredi, Deva Cassel, daughter of Vincent and Monica Bellucci, will be Angelica and Benedetta Porcaroli will take on the role of Concetta. The cast will also feature Paolo Calabresi, Francesco Colella, Astrid Meloni and Greta Esposito.
