The ‘siren skin’, the magical aesthetic straight from the nineties

The 'siren skin', the magical aesthetic straight from the nineties

Attention millennials, glitter is out! New York Fashion Week has revived nostalgia for the magical beauty looks popularized by Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Ophélie Winter in the 1990s. And this trend now has a name, ‘siren skin’, translating to shiny skin, as if wet, with shimmering reflections. A make-up that should not go unnoticed as the end-of-year holidays approach.

Quiet luxury was the order of the day in New York during the shows dedicated to the spring-summer 2024 season, but not all brands followed the trend, quite the contrary. The luxury house The Blonds has taken the opposite path, focusing on opulence, glamor and magic, drawing inspiration from two legendary creatures, mermaids and unicorns, whose imagery regularly influences the worlds of fashion. fashion and beauty. A theme which is translated into make-up by XXL nails, colored or adorned with rhinestones, dark or pastel eye shadows, and even more by skin sparkling with a thousand lights. A trend that some millennials have already mastered to perfection, having tested it – and adopted it – at the end of the 1990s.

Hydration and glitter

It is the beauty content creator Cat Quinn who is at the origin of a video lifting the veil on the ‘siren skin’, evoking the fashion show of the brand The Blonds, and explaining having tested it under the leadership of the makeup artist Jessie Lefler. We see the young woman wearing a subtly shimmering purple eye shadow, having her body coated with a mix of two products that are a priori essential to adopt the ‘siren skin’. These are two essentials from the MAC Cosmetics brand: Strobe Cream Luminous Moisturizer and Glitter Reflects Transparent Pink Shimmer Powder for Face, Body and Hair. A duo supposed to reproduce the moist (or very hydrated) effect of the skin, with subtle shiny highlights.

In just a few days, the video collected more than 10,000 views, suggesting the emergence of a strong trend in the weeks to come. And if The Blonds brand fashion show was dedicated to the spring-summer 2024 season, there is no doubt that the beauty look should make people happy well before then, especially as the end-of-year holidays approach. Note also that it is not essential to choose the products mentioned by Cat Quinn, a light moisturizing cream and a shimmering powder will suffice, whatever the brand chosen.

Entre le shower make-up et la laminated skin

If this new trend gives pride of place to glitter, it is reminiscent of two other beauty aesthetics that went viral at the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023: the ‘laminated skin’ and the ‘shower make-up’. Both then sought to reproduce a humid, or wet, effect, like after a sports session for the first, or after getting out of the shower for the second. A rendering that we find, to a lesser extent, in the ‘siren skin’.

As a reminder, the ‘laminated skin’ aimed to obtain a moist complexion, or more precisely a natural glow with a shiny effect, thanks to a light foundation and a fixing mist, while the ‘shower make-up’ was based on the use a radiance base, a foundation, a moisturizer, and contouring products. The idea remains the same as ‘siren skin’: to give the effect of naturally glowing skin, minus the glitter.
