Aronia, also known as chokeberry in this country, is an extremely healthy fruit, the consumption of which brings far-reaching benefits. In addition to the strong anti-aging properties, the antioxidant effect of aronia is particularly noteworthy. In this way, the berries can provide effective protection against age-related diseases.
Chokeberries have been used for over a hundred years to treat urinary tract infections thanks to their diuretic, disinfectant and anti-inflammatory properties. Recent research shows that the berry has many more health benefits.
Age-related diseases are increasing
Since life expectancy has risen sharply, especially in the last century, age-related diseases have become significantly more widespread, which particularly affects malignant tumors and degenerative diseases of the central nervous system.
Effects of oxidative stress
However, some natural ingredients in plants can counteract neurodegenerative diseases, reports a Croatian research team in the journal Antioxidants. Thanks to its significant antioxidant effect, Aronia melanocarpa shows promising results in the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
The antioxidant effect of aronia was also confirmed in another study, the results of which are published in the “Chinese Journal of Analytical Chemistry”. Experts report that the plant is also increasingly being used in the food industry because of its powerful antioxidant and anti-aging properties.
Aronia is a superfood
In a third independent study, aronia is even called a superfood because the berry is a good source of natural and valuable phytonutrients. The researchers report that Aronia melanocarpa is considered, among other things, to be one of the richest known sources of antioxidants.
The content of antioxidants in aronia significantly exceeds that of currants, cranberries, blueberries, elderberries and gooseberries. The team adds that the leaves of the Aronia genus are also high in polyphenols, flavonoids and phenolic acids, which are also beneficial for health.
Chokeberry inhibits diabetes
In addition, the fears also contain many vitamins, tocopherols, folic acid and carotenoids, the researchers explain. Thanks to the healthy ingredients, aronia not only has a strong antioxidant effect, but also has an anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, anti-microbial and anti-diabetic effect.
Include chokeberry in the diet
Taken together, the results make it clear that chokeberry has an exceptionally strong antioxidant effect, which particularly protects the human body from free radicals that can damage healthy cells and trigger changes in DNA. So the chokeberry should not be missing in any healthy diet. (as)
