Growth pains in children are linked to physiological growth processes and are usually concentrated in the legs or back
School resumes, we start again with sports. And those pains also resume which, even if they cause mum and dad so much anxiety, are simply to be connected to physiological processes of growth, so much so that they are defined growth pains. Obviously, all the necessary checks must be done together with the pediatrician, but it is essential to live with a certain serenity these problems that affect children in their development and are more often concentrated in the legs or back.
An example? Tibia and knee
It generally begins in the second half of elementary school and can arrive accompanying the child even at the end of the primary school cycle. It is called Osgood-Schlatter syndrome: it is a very widespread and often worrying clinical picture that in most cases does not require any treatment and leaves no results.
This condition can be considered an inflammation of the bone growth nucleus, and in particular of the tibia. The growth plate is particularly vascularized and is located at the insertion of the tendon on the patella: the consequence of this normal anatomical situation, in some cases, is an abnormal response of the tendon that is inserted on the patella. The consequence? There is an answer to every mechanical stress that occurs in that area. So a run, a jump or in any case a physical effort that also involves the knee area is enough to arrive at the appearance of pain and functional limitation for the child.
How to behave? Having said that the application of cold is optimal for overcoming the acute phase, in case of pain it is necessary to suspend sports for a certain period also in order to reduce the risk of calcifications. Only in rare cases can a detachment of the growth nucleus occur, which may require a surgical approach.
Beware of fatigue
Although these pains can be considered a sort of almost normal response to exertion, and we are not just talking about the tibia and knee but also the vertebrae resulting in back pain, don't forget to talk to your pediatrician. Correct diagnosis is crucial.
The exact origin of these pathological conditions, which manifest themselves precisely with persistent pain that tends to appear after an effort around the knee or in the vicinity of the spine, in any case, is not yet fully clear. The important thing is not to stress the osteo-articular system too much and remember that sometimes rest, quite simply, can be the most effective cure. Doctors still recommend the temporary abandonment of physical activity: if you really want, you can assist your child with drugs that can limit inflammation. the best weapon, for growing pains, has only one name: patience!
