The baguette, a French heritage, but an Italian record...

Culinary heritage recognized by UNESCO since 2022, the baguette is not just a French know-how. The Italians actually hold the record for the longest copy in the world. A skill that French bakers intend to take up again…

It's like a watered sprinkler: Europe, which prides itself on being the second largest consumer of pizza in the world (behind the United States) and ahead of Italy with more than ten kilos of margheritas and other reginas devoured per year and per inhabitant, the Italians can be proud of being the world champions… of the baguette! Or rather the longest wand on the planet. A record made in June 2019 in Como thanks to a 132.62 cm specimen.

Now, the French bakers want to bring the cup (the baguette) home during a new performance which must be entered in the Guinness Book of Records. Under the leadership of the National Confederation of Bakery and Pastry, an attempt to bake the longest baguette in the world will take place in Suresnes, in the Paris region, on May 5. Organized as part of the Suresnes Baguette Show, the competition will be embodied by twelve bakers who will be keen to take up this challenge, and return this record to French heritage, just as the baguette has become a know-how and a culture recognized by the Unesco in 2022.

To try to achieve this new record for the longest baguette in the world, everything will be done on site, at the Terrasse du Fécheray in Suresnes. Not only will the dough be kneaded before the eyes of curious onlookers, but it will be shaped then baked in a rolling oven. It will take approximately eight hours of cooking. Ultimately, the potential champion will be at least five centimeters thick.

Note that at the end of the record – whether it is approved or not, the baguette will be cut, spread with Nutella and distributed to all gourmets. Part of it will also be shared with homeless people during a marauding campaign carried out by the Celije association.
