Here are the foods that cause the most gas (and it's not beans!)

When we talk about the foods that cause the most flatulence, we spontaneously think of white beans, cabbage… But other more common foods, which you might not suspect, also cause gas. Here are the ones.

Do you think only white beans or chickpeas give you gas? Think again ! Common foods can also trigger smelly flatulence, so be careful what you eat!

Beef and pork

Red meat lovers be careful because it can cause smelly gases. Indeed, beef and pork contain methionine, an amino acid which contains sulfur. Passing through the intestine, this element is degraded by intestinal bacteria, which produces hydrogen sulphide, responsible for the bad smell of farts.

In addition, the proteins in meat and the fat it contains slow down intestinal transit and take time to be broken down. Which promotes intestinal fermentation, increasing the bad smell of flatulence.

Onion and garlic

Garlic and onion, but also leeks and wheat are composed of fructans, which are fermentable carbohydrates that our digestive tract cannot metabolize. These molecules therefore arrive in the colon, without having been digested. This is where the fermentation process then begins, generating foul-smelling gases.

The chicken

Like the red meats mentioned above, chicken contains sulfur, due to the presence in its composition of the amino acids methionine and cysteine. During the decomposition phase of chicken proteins, sulfur is therefore released. In addition, chicken, when fried, becomes rich in fat, which slows down transit and the digestion process, again promoting fermentation in the colon.

Sweeteners

Certain sweeteners, found in particular in sugary drinks, such as aspartame or stevia, can cause gas. These elements are not fully digested by our body, so they are in a state of fermentation in the intestines and gases such as hydrogen, methane and hydrogen sulfide are then produced.
