These 3 signs that can predict a breakup (and that you can observe from the start)

Do you want to know if your relationship is doomed to failure? Discover three signs that show this to you, visible from the start of the relationship. Here they are !

While many people think that arguments and big changes are the main factors in divorce, know that this is not true! Indeed, in a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, American scientists followed 168 couples for 13 years. The goal ? Observe the warning signs of relationship failure. Here are three main factors that would herald a breakup.

1) You give “too much” affection to your partner from the start

According to the authors of the study, the first sign giving a clue to the durability of the marriage would be the level of affection that a couple expresses at the beginning of their relationship. Indeed, scientists have discovered that couples who were very affectionate at the beginning of the relationship were statistically more likely to separate later.

2) Your relationship does not have solid foundations

This phenomenon is called “blind love”. In other words, it corresponds to the initial infatuation that we find among certain couples at the start of a relationship.

However, as psychologist Madeleine Mason Roantree reminds the media The Independent: “we know that infatuation is not a long-lasting state.” Indeed, “once this state disappears, we must look at what remains between the two people, and if there is no other connection than passion, then the relationship risks collapsing”. This is the case when the relationship is built solely on passion, leaving aside solid foundations such as friendship, mutual respect as well as common interests. As a result, once the initial enthusiasm dissipates, the relationship loses steam and becomes more prone to failure. The American psychologist adds: “There is also the danger of falling in love with one aspect of someone, knowing that it is not lasting, but hoping that things will change”.

3) Your relationship is not stabilizing

The phenomenon of “disillusionment” generally occurs after the first phases of an intense relationship, when the couple cannot move towards a more stable phase. This is when the risk of separation increases.

However, it is necessary to remember that each relationship is unique. A passionate start to a romance does not mean that your relationship is necessarily headed for ruin. Smooth communication, mutual support as well as efforts from both partners also play their role in making a relationship last.
